Small Changes, Big Impact — The Latest Gameplay Updates in Chikki
Discover how seemingly small gameplay additions—from the new Acorn System to movement refinements and the early Industry Act—are influencing the development of Chikki: Forgotten Roots in bigger ways than we originally expected.

Game development is full of surprises.

In our latest gameplay update, we explored how a feature that initially seemed quite small quickly began influencing progression, movement, exploration and even how we''re approaching future level design.

If you haven''t watched the update yet, here''s a look at some of the topics we covered—and why they''re more important than they might first appear.

The Acorn System: More Than Just a Collectible

One of the biggest additions we''ve recently introduced is our new Acorn System.

At first glance, acorns might look like a straightforward collectible. But during development, we quickly realised they were becoming something much more meaningful.

Rather than simply guiding players from the beginning of a level to the end, the system encourages exploration and introduces another layer of decision-making. Players now have a reason to pay closer attention to the world around them, think about different routes, and interact with levels in new ways.

One of the most interesting parts of development is seeing how a feature evolves beyond its original purpose. A mechanic that starts as a simple idea can end up influencing progression, pacing and even how future environments are designed.

Refining Movement

Movement has always been at the heart of Chikki: Forgotten Roots.

Every jump, climb and glide contributes to how the game feels, so even relatively small adjustments can have a noticeable impact on the overall experience.

Recently we''ve been refining mechanics such as wall jumping, focusing on responsiveness, timing and overall flow.

The goal isn''t to make movement easier.

It''s to make player intention feel clearer.

When controls feel natural, players stop thinking about the mechanics themselves and begin focusing entirely on exploring the world. That''s the experience we''re aiming for.

Looking Ahead to the Industry Act

Alongside gameplay improvements, we''ve also begun laying the foundations for the Industry Act.

Although this area is still in its early stages, work has already started on its environments, visual direction and gameplay ideas.

These early phases are often some of the most exciting because they''re where an area begins to establish its own identity. Every decision we make now helps shape the atmosphere, mechanics and player experience that will come later.

While we''re not ready to reveal everything just yet, we''re looking forward to sharing more as development continues.

When One Change Affects Everything

One lesson keeps repeating itself throughout development:

Small gameplay changes rarely stay small.

  • A new mechanic influences progression.
  • Progression influences level design.
  • Movement changes affect exploration.
  • Future environments reshape today''s decisions.

Everything inside a game is connected.

That''s both one of the biggest challenges and one of the most rewarding parts of development. Every improvement has a ripple effect, encouraging us to revisit systems, rethink ideas and continue refining the overall experience.

It''s a constant process of iteration, and that''s what helps a game grow into something stronger over time.
